Pain, Here I Come!

The first day of day camp. In other words, I - AM - FREE!

Look at these little maniacs waiting for the bus to pick them up and whisk them off to be worn down by young camp counselors who will inherit my gray hairs:

For the next two weeks, I get to do whatever I want for an entire day. Eat a salad. Drink my coffee. Catch up on my reading and writing. Go for a run.

The last time I went for a run was when they were in summer day camp. Last year.

So you can imagine, I was amped up.

The bus snatched the two maniacs a little after seven and I hit the road to the running track by half-past. With my iPhone blaring Audioslave, I was a speed-walking demon. Once I got to the track, which is about a mile and a half away, I let loose and sped past everybody.

By everybody, I mean the group of old Chinese folks who've been walking around the track for hours and the plump couple in their sixties and the wiry man who, judging by his gait, was probably rehabilitating from a stroke.

Yes. They're tough. I know because they're the same regulars from last year.

But so what. It felt great. It was inspiring. This new found invigoration will see me through the rubbery loss of elasticity in my knee and the pinch pain I'm now feeling in my hip and back. Or hopefully, it'll last at least four hours until my next dose of Tylenol.

And a final word to my husband: we have to find a new place to stash the treats.

Score!

No step stool - no evidence

  1. I think one week of running a year is plenty of exercise. Plus you'll have some cardio hiding the snacks. Win-win.

  2. I remember this time last year that I first stumbled upon your blog. You were extolling your freedom then and surprise! Now too! :) I miss you Nami. Good luck with the running and the hiding. The homework is a brilliant idea! Hahaha!

    1. Miss you, too Ava. Don't be such a stranger - bring your coffee and cookies, since Samu ate all ours.

  5. I'm so jealous. Noah goes nowhere. He is sitting over there on the couch right now, where he was earlier. He only occasionally goes places. I miss being alone ALL DAY LONG, just me and the pups, with Fridays to just be naked or watch porn or eat snacks hidden in my underwear drawer.

    1. It's the "eating snacks" part I have trouble with as far as privacy. All the rest, they just leave me alone. Noah's free to stay here when he's up to researching "Disney" in Times Square!

  6. Hahahaha! Busted!!!!!!! I'm using the summer as a chance to finally get into shape- Although, my kids weren't in camp for 2 weeks- We could barely muster 1 week at the rates here in DC which I'm not used to at all! :)

    1. City prices are ridiculous - it's the insurance, I hear. Plus, your guys might be a little too young for a full day camp. But that's what they have YOU for, right?

  7. {Jealous!} I can't remember the last time I went for a run. Or listened to Audioslave. Or took a dump all by myself without somebody either sitting in my lap or examining the contents of the toilet afterwards. Sigh.

    1. Ha, Ha! Solo dumps. It has been a long time. I make them score it now...like Olympic judges.
